“Eyes On Me”

In Downloads, Hip Hop, Music on June 29, 2009 at 8:42 pm

Raw is a good word for the Thornton brothers. Raw beats and raw lyrics complement the omnipresent lyrics about raw dope. “Eyes On Me” is the best track off of Till The Casket Drops that we’ve been privileged enough to hear so far. Pharrell produced the track and sings the hook and Dwight Howard’s celebrity crush (Twitter @DwightHoward) Keri Hilson makes a late appearance on the track (she doesn’t add too much). Malice takes some impressive strides on the track that actually best his older bro:

I’m talkin’ you can count it, papi it’s all there/ I’m talkin’ cookin’ up that Slumdog Millionaire.

Still waiting on the Rick Rubin tracks…

Clipse – Eyes On Me feat. Pharrell & Keri Hilson

8.5/10. Pharrell has outdone himself with this beat and Clipse have their typical

Lykke Li – Everybody But Me

6.7/10. An old track off of her album Youth Novels. While it may only be an album cut, her sultry voice still shines through.

Clipse – Kinda Like a Big Deal feat. Kanye West

8.6/10. ”A far cry from the stash in the rental van/ I’m the reason the hood need a dental plan.” Clipse has moved away from those insane minimalist beats that The Neptunes hooked them up with on their last album and have adopted this riff-driven beat produced by DJ Khalil.

Peaches – Trick or Treat

7.8/10. Peaches may be 40 but she’s still pumping out sultry tracks that have nothing to do with anything but sex. Here you will find one of her more ridiculous beats as the German hits it hard again. Potential girl-power anthem.

Annie – Two of Hearts

6.5/10. Can you say Madonna? This track is straight 80′s and straight danceable.

Annie – Anthonio (Fred Falke Remix)

8.8/10. The Norweigan’s candor is unmistakable as she sings about dancing with an unbeknownst gentleman.

Annie – Anthonio (Designer Drugs Remix)

8.8/10. Expect Designer Drugs to flip this track into an up-tempo rave-worthy track.

Annie – Heartbeat (Alan Braxe Remix)

9.0/10. Quite a euphoric track.  The vocals truthfully remind me of TATU (remember those Russian lesbians), while the track itself has all the tenets to become a smash.

Kid Cudi – Embrace the Martian (Tevar Edit)

8.1/10. Once this track kicks, it won’t stop. The beat is far better than the vocals, which is usually the case with Cudi but he does do some singing on the hook here.

Clipse and Rick Rubin

In Hip Hop, Music on March 2, 2009 at 9:22 pm

If you didn’t know this already, you are a fool.  Rick Rubin is working on part of Clipse’s new album Till the Casket Drops that is due out in summer ’09.  Here at [cl] we have already posted a discussion on the Road Till the Casket Drops mixtape, which came out at the very end of ’08 with the dropping of the PlayCloths clothing line, which is run by Malice and Pusha T themselves.

Clipse are now signed with Columbia Records, which became official soon after heavy producer Rick Rubin became the big boss over at the label.  The folks over at Re-Up Gang released some hysterical/great pictures of Rubin and the brothers together coming out of a studio in Malibu.  Check em out below and stay tuned for the single off the new album called “Kinda Like a Big Deal” produced by DJ Khalil and featuring Martin Louie the King Jr. due out after the first week in March.

Review of “Kinda Like a Big Deal” by the Neptunes (must read)
